Most owners start the morning with five reports. Revenue in one place, payments in another, support in a chat, tasks in a tracker. Each report is correct. Together they don't answer the only question that matters: are we on track, and if not, who can fix it today?
A management board answers it in three steps.
1. Goal
One number for the period. For an online service it is usually revenue or paying customers for the month. The board shows the goal and where we are against the plan for today, not against the whole month.
2. Gap
The difference between plan and fact, in money. A percentage hides the size of the problem. "Minus $4.1k" makes the conversation concrete.
3. Levers
Which team can close the gap. Every department board feeds the hub with one or two numbers. When one turns red, you open that board and see why it moved, the problem, and the action.
- Look at the goal line. Green: move on.
- Red: read the gap in money.
- Find the department that turned red and open its board.
- Check the task attached to the problem and who owns it.
What it replaces
The weekly meeting where everyone presents their own numbers. The board shows the same numbers every morning, so the meeting becomes a decision about one or two levers.
