A task tracker tells you what the team finished. It does not tell you whether any of it mattered. Forty closed tasks in a month can leave the main number exactly where it was.
One extra field
Before a task starts, write the effect you expect: which number, by how much, by when. After it ships, check the number. Three outcomes are possible: it worked, it did nothing, it made things worse.
On the Matrix task tracker, T-101 "backup payment gateway" carried the expectation "card payments back above 85%". It shipped, and the number returned to 87% within a day. That task is marked as worked, not just done.
What changes
- The team sees which kinds of work move the goal and does more of them.
- Tasks with no expected effect get questioned before they start.
- The monthly review becomes a list of what worked, not a list of what was busy.
